Looking for a glimpse into the life of the Doges, the old rulers of Venice? Plan to be there on the 1st Sunday of September when Venezia trots out the past. You can watch boat races up and down the Grand Canal all day, but the real treasure is the historical water pageant parade that begins the day’s festivities. The elaborate and elegant multi-colored 16th century-style boats float by, each manned by 8 or 12 man crews, carrying the Doge, the Doge’s wife and other high-ranking Venetian officials. If the boats and flags aren’t glorious enough, the traditional Renaissance garb and horns will most certainly transport you back in time. Truly unforgettable!
